Words that end in -itis, like colitis, refer to inflammation in an area of the body. Colitis in dogs talks about inflammation in the large bowel, including the colon and rectum. Generally, dogs with colitis have diarrhea. Many respond well to supportive care, a bland diet, and probiotics. While others may require additional support. Some dogs may have an underlying disease causing colitis, while others may develop it secondary to stress or intestinal parasites.
