Anyone who has worked in a veterinary clinic knows that Techs are the backbone of the veterinary team, but the public’s perception of their role often falls short of the reality. So how can we show that we understand and appreciate their skills?
1. Pay Them Properly
Salary is often called a “hygiene” issue – get it wrong and the job will stink, even if it comes with a great workplace or perks. Vet Techs are skilled professionals, and their time and expertise should be rewarded properly.
2. Appreciate Their Skill
Being a Vet Tech can be a thankless task, so make sure you let your team know when you appreciate them. This can be anything from small personal compliments when an individual Tech does a task well, to large-scale displays of appreciation for the whole team like buying in lunch or giving a performance-based bonus when the clinic is doing well.
3. Reward Their Diligence
Have a Tech who goes above and beyond? Hold on to them for dear life. Not only will they do their job well, but they will also teach and inspire others to do the same. Techs like this can turn a good team into a great one, so be sure to identify and encourage this kind of talent.
4. Safeguard Their Health
Vet Techs might seem superhuman at times, but they still need to look after themselves properly. Make sure they take regular comfort breaks, stay hydrated, and eat their meals on time. They also need their downtime away from the clinic, so make sure overtime is saved for exceptional circumstances, rather than a regular occurrence.
Honoring your Vet Techs’ contributions to your clinic will encourage the rest of your team to do the same, and can help the public to understand just how important they are to their pets’ care
