The Bordetella vaccination is a lifestyle vaccine that is used to help protect dogs against upper respiratory infections caused by Bordetella bronchiseptica bacteria. This vaccination should be considered for dogs who spend time with other dogs or that frequent high canine traffic areas like grooming or boarding facilities, dog shows, or dog parks. This vaccine may be administered as a subcutaneous injection, intranasally, or orally. The vaccination age may vary by manufacturer; however, all can be administered to puppies. The vaccination frequency depends on previous vaccine history and the way in which the vaccination was administered. Oral and intranasal vaccinations only require an initial dose that is protective for a year, then is boosted annually as needed. Alternatively, if given as an injection , an initial two-part series must be completed and then boosted annually.
