Dogs can receive this vaccine as young as eight weeks of age. Several types of Borrelia bacteria cause Lyme disease. However, most cases in North America are caused by Borrelia Burgodeferi. The Borrelia bacteria live inside infected black-legged (deer ticks) ticks and are transmitted to dogs through a tick bite. Once inside the dog, the bacteria replicate and can go on to cause clinical disease.
