What is Happening?
Recent reports indicate a rise in cases of Canine Infectious Respiratory Disease Complex (CIRDC). Just like in humans, upper respiratory illness in dogs aren’t caused by one bug, but rather by many different viruses and bacteria sometimes working in concert, including canine adenovirus, canine parainfluenza virus, and Bordetella bronchiseptica.
When to Seek Veterinary Care
While a cough in dogs is often due to a mild cold, it can also indicate more serious conditions. If your dog shows prolonged symptoms, signs of respiratory distress, eye or nose discharge, appears lethargic, or loses appetite, we strongly recommend a veterinary evaluation. If you suspect your dog has a contagious respiratory disease, particularly if they have been in shelters or boarding facilities, please inform us in advance of your appointment. This allows us to take necessary precautions to prevent transmission to other households.
Preventative Measures
- Annual Vaccinations: It’s crucial for dogs, especially those in contact with other dogs in indoor settings like daycares or boarding facilities, to be vaccinated annually for adenovirus, distemper, Bordetella, parainfluenza, H3N2 influenza, and other pathogens like leptospirosis.
- Daycares and Boarding Facilities: Opt for facilities that emphasize good hygiene, require vaccination, and avoid overcrowding. Ensure your dog is vaccinated at least a week before any boarding.
- New Dogs: If you plan to add a new dog to your family this holiday season, opt for reputable breeders or shelters and isolate them from other dogs for 2 weeks.
